In this video, I show you two easy ways to separate first and last names (or other similar data) in Excel, using flash fill and text to columns.

Enter list of names in column A.

Method 1: Flash Fill

  • Type first name from A1 into B1 and last name into C1
  • Click in cell B2 and click Data tab – Flash Fill
  • Click in cell C2 and click Data tab – Flash Fill

Method 2: Text to Columns

  • Select column with the names
  • Click Data tab – Text to Columns
  • Select Delimited, Space, then Finish
