Breaking Down the Concepts
This tutorial demonstrates two ways to enter the same math problem. Both produce the same underlying result, but the setup and display are slightly different.
Method 1: Enter the Entire Problem in One Cell
=(7/8)/(5/4)
This method uses Excel like a calculator. The formula begins with an equals sign, which tells Excel to calculate what follows.
The forward slash / is Excel’s division symbol. It appears three times in this formula:
7/8creates the first fraction.5/4creates the second fraction.- The slash between the two sets of parentheses divides the first fraction by the second.
Why are parentheses used?
The parentheses keep each fraction grouped as a single value:
(7/8) divided by (5/4)
They make the intended calculation clear and ensure Excel evaluates each fraction as a unit before dividing them. Parentheses are commonly used in Excel to control the order in which parts of a formula are calculated.
Why does Excel show 0.7?
If the result cell uses the default General number format, Excel displays the answer as a decimal:
0.7
That is the same value as:
7/10
Changing the cell to a Fraction format changes how the result appears, not its underlying value.
Method 2: Divide Fractions Stored in Cells
In the second method, each fraction is placed in its own cell:

The formula is: =B5/C5
Excel divides the value stored in B5 by the value stored in C5.
Why this method is useful:
- The original fractions remain visible.

Fraction Number Formatting
Before typing fractions directly into cells, format those cells as Fraction. Otherwise, Excel may interpret an entry such as 7/8 as a date, depending on your settings.
To apply the format:
- Select the cells.
- Open Format Cells.
- Select Fraction.
- Choose the desired fraction type.
Microsoft notes that Fraction formatting allows numbers to be entered and displayed as fractions while remaining available for calculations.
Why choose “Up to three digits”?
Excel offers formats that allow one-, two-, or three-digit denominators. A more detailed format can display a closer fractional representation of a decimal result.
For this example, 0.7 is exactly 7/10, so you need a format capable of displaying a two-digit denominator. Selecting Up to three digits easily accommodates that result.
This setting affects only the displayed fraction. Excel still stores and calculates the same numeric value underneath.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Method 1: Enter the Problem Directly
- Click an empty cell.
- Enter: =(7/8)/(5/4)
- Press Enter.
- Excel may initially display the answer as: 0.7
- To display it as
7/10, change the cell’s number format to Fraction.
Method 2: Divide Fractions in Separate Cells
- Select the cells you’ll use for the fractions and answer.
- Right-click and choose Format Cells.
- On the Number tab, select Fraction.
- Choose Up to three digits and click OK.
- Enter
7/8in the first cell. - Enter
5/4in the second cell. - In the answer cell, enter: =B5/C5
- Press Enter.
Excel displays the result as: 7/10
Additional Tips
- Every Excel formula must begin with an equals sign (
=). - Use a forward slash (
/) for division. - Format cells as fractions before typing values such as
7/8so Excel is less likely to interpret them as dates. - If Excel shows a decimal answer, the calculation is not necessarily wrong—the cell may simply be using the General number format.
- Parentheses are especially helpful when entering multiple fractions directly into one formula.
- Using separate cells is usually better when you want to reuse the worksheet with different numbers.
